Decluttering

One of the easiest things you can do to minimise the stress of moving is to begin your decluttering and preparation as early as possible. Remember to be ruthless by asking yourself if you want the items in your new home. Offer family memories to family. Plan a garage sale and make yourself some extra $$$ leftovers can be given to family, friends or donated to charities.

Start with one cupboard at a time and work through each room. Every step gives a sense of achievement and is usually very cathartic. If need be, call on a good friend to help and give encouragement.

Australian Mobile Storage (AMS) suggests you follow the tips below to make your move even more simple.

  • Check use by dates on everything and toss those that are out of date – no use moving things that you will have to throw out when you unpack. Check bathroom supplies and medications too.
  • Clear out your wardrobes of old clothes that are stained, moth eaten, you haven’t worn in a long time or that no longer fit.
  • Get rid of uncomfortable or broken shoe
  • Tidy out your linen cupboard and be ruthless about what you keep
  • Sort paperwork and make sure everything is filed so that it can be found when needed
  • Toss out old magazines and send old books to a charity
  • Clear out the junk drawers or baskets and put all of the bits and pieces where they belong
  • Set up permanent storage crates or baskets for electrical bits & bobs, hobbies etc
  • Make sure that everything is in its place before packing
  • Give your adult children their possessions and let them decide what they want to keep or toss. It’s amazing just how decisive they can be when they have to store it themselves

Good luck, and remember you can seek professional help if decluttering is a problem

AMS can arrange insurance of your possessions and can even recommend people to do your packing and unpacking for you – how easy is that!  Sit back and give the directions.
